WELCOME,XIE LEI

BUSINESS STUDENT BUILDING BRIDGES

Six months ago,19-year-old Xie Lei said goodbye to her family and friends and boarded a plane for London. It was the first time that she had left China. “I was very excited but also quite nervous. I didn’t know what to expect,”Xie Lei recalled.

Xie Lei is studying for a business qualification at a university in China and has come to our university on a year-long exchange programme. "I chose the exchange programme because I wanted to learn about global business and improve my English. My ambition is to set up a businessin China after graduation, "she explained.

At first, Xie Lei had to adapt to life in a different country. “You have to get used to a whole new life.” she said. I had to learn how to use public transport and how to ask for things I didn’t know the English names for. When I got lost, I had to ask passers-by for help, but people here speak fast and use words I’m not familiar with. I ask them to repeat themselves a lot!”

Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation, Xie Lei chose to live with a host family, who can help with her adaptation to the new culture. When I miss home, I feel comforted to have a second family,Xie Lei said “When there’s something I don’t know or understand I can ask them. They are also keen to learn about China. Laura, the daughter of my host family, wants to study in China in the future. We take turns to cook each evening. They really love my stir-fried tomatoes and eggs! Laura says she always feels hungry when she smells it, so I taught her how to cook it, too.

Another challenge for Xie Lei is the academic requirements. The first time that she had to write an essay, her tutor explained that she must acknowledge what other people had said if she cited their ideas, but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought! Xie Lei was confused because she thought she knew less than other people. Her tutor advised her to read lots of information in order to form a wise opinion of her own.

Xie Lei also found many courses included students’ participation in class as part of the final result. Students need to generate ideas, offer examples, apply concepts, and raise questions, as well as give presentations. At first, Xie Lei had no idea what she should say, but what surprised her was that she found herself speaking up in class after just a few weeks. “My presentation on traditional Chinese art was a great success, which boosted my confidence,” she said. “I’ll use these skills back home for presentations. They 'll help me build a strong business in the future.”

Now halfway through her exchange year, Xie Lei feels much more at home in the UK.What seemed strange before now appears quite normal to her. "Engaging in British culture has helped, she said. "As well as studying hard, I've been involved in social activities. British people are fascinated by our culture and eager to learn more about it, so I’m keen to share my culture with them. While I‘m learning about business I'm also acting as a cultural messenger building a bridge between us.

We will follow Xie Lei’s progress in later editions, but for now we wish her all the best.

Host:This morning were looking at Chinese language learning around the world. We’re very pleased to welcome Aisha Khan, who is from the Confucius institute in Karachi, Pakistan. Good morning, Aisha. First, tell us how you came to speak Chinese so well!

Aisha Khan:Morning. Well, because I had a great teacher, Ms Hu! She is the best Chinese teacher in my city.

Host:So what makes her such a great teacher?

Aisha Khan:Well, apart from language, she taught us about Chinese culture, and we came to love it.

Host:Oh, really, what sort of things did she teach you?

Aisha Khan:Well, once she taught us how to make dumplings. She said that during Chinese New Year, families usually sit together and make dumplings. Eating those delicious dumplings together in Ms Hu's home, we felt like family!

Host:She sounds like a great teacher, I bet she's a great inspiration, too. Is that why you became a teacher yourself?

Aisha Khan:Absolutely. She knew the important role language and cultural exchange would play in the future. I wanted to carry on her work, so I joined the institute as a teacher.

Host:Has the institute changed a lot since then?

Aisha Khan:Yes. At first, we only had a few students and teachers. Now we have many more. The institute is also a centre for Chinese activities, like a bridge into China.

Host:So why do you think it's been so successful?

Aisha Khan: Well, I think learning Chinese has become important for many people, and Chinese culture is famous around the world.

Host:It is, isn't it? I believe its importance has grown because trade between China and Pakistan has increased.

Aisha Khan: Definitely. And as Ms Hu believes, breaking down language and cultural barriers brings the world together.

Host:Your students must also feel that learning Chinese is beneficial to their future.

Aisha Khan:Indeed. Many students go to work at Chinese companies. It's great to see them go on to strengthen our connection with China.

Host:You seem to love your job.

Aisha Khan:Oh, certainly. It's very satisfying.

Host:Oh, that's great to hear! Well, thanks for joining us. It was a pleasure talking with you. Carry on the good work.

STUDYING ABROAD

IS IT A GOOD OR ABAD IDEA?

Dear Editor,

In the past few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people studying abroad. Although studying abroad can bring great benefits, I think the disadvantagesfor young people are greater.

To begin with, many students who study abroad face great economic pressure. That means studying abroad is just not possible for everyone. Tuition fees and living expenses are much more expensive than at home and could end up costing most families an arm and a leg. Studying in China is much more convenient and can help save money

Another important factor to consider is the tremendous pressure that comes with studying abroad. Students must learn how to live in an unfamiliar environment with limited language skills. Some may struggle and suffer from culture shock when learning how to behave in new surroundings. Other students are not mature enough to handle the challenges by themselves and may become depressed. Some students might even encounter problems with personal safety. In addition, different approaches toteaching and learning may come as a shock to many students

A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, young people who study in China also have a great future to look forward to! As China has boomed the educational environment has improved significantly, with many great universities now available. They have great facilities and outstanding professors, helping to educate young people who will contribute to the economy and further strengthen our country.

To sum up, one cannot deny the fact that studying abroad has its disadvantages, so when you think about studying abroad you should consider these many factors.

Kind regard,

Wang Li ( mother of twin girls)

Dear Editor,

Is studying abroad a good idea or not? Thereare certainly disadvantages, but in my opinion, the advantages are much greater. As I always tell my son, there are no great difficulties or a person who is brave, optimistic, and willing to work hard!

The first advantage of studying abroad is personal growth. The education you gain and the experiences you have will change you for the better. For example, you will certainly become more independent because you will have to deal with all kinds of difficulties by yourself. Studying abroad also helps you to gain a global perspective and improve your general competence.

Another advantage is the increased chance for cultural exchange. Chinese students can be seen as cultural envoy promoting friendship between nations. International students in China also bring their colourful cultures here. Cooperating with people from diverse cultural backgrounds helps us view the world from different angles and thus gives us more insight into our own culture.

Finally, studying abroad provides a great opportunity to contribute to the development of our motherland. China’s global outlook, with projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative, has helped us make connections across the world. Therefore, China needs more talented young people with a global perspective who are highly competent with languages have leadership and organisational skills, and have strong cultural awareness. Students who study abroad will develop such skills and abilities, and these in turn will provide them with better career opportunities.

All in all, studying abroad helps to build character and increase people’s understanding ofcultural diversity while strengthening China and building a shared future for all. I think this life-changing experience is certainly worthwhile and I hopemy child will study abroad in the future.

Sincerely yours

Zhang Yi(father of one boy)

International Students in China

Narrator:In recent years, China has become a popular destination for international students. Today we’ll meet a few of the many students from abroad studying in China, and take a quick look at their lives here.

Narrator: The main thing that international students coming to China learn is the language. For many of these curious young people, Chinese is an ancient, mysterious, and very interesting language.Learning Chinese of course helps them with daily communication, but, more importantly, it is a key opening up the treasures of Chinese culture.

Karim:I’e enjoyed learning Chinese, but it's been a challenge. I cannot tell the four tones apart yet. I think I still have a long way to go to become Chinese teacher!

Kathy:I do think that Chinese characters are quite difficult to write! Some of them look like pictures such as, 鱼,马,森, so those are fairly easy for me to remember. But others are really difficult to remember, because they are combinations of different parts, like 休,采. So, I try to learn them by making up a story for myself, to connect the parts of the character to its meaning Chinese characters are really difficult but I also think that they are so artistic!

Narrator:Some international students are particularly interested in the artistic aspect of Chinese characters. Karim has been practising calligraphy for several months. He loves the beauty of the art form and says it has given him a better understanding of Chinese culture.

Karim:I think calligraphy is a wonderful expression of freedom and respect for individuality. There are so many different styles, like楷书,隶书,(and)草书. 柳公权is my favourite, very elegant. My teacher told me that (the) Chinese believe that writing beautifully is basic etiquette礼仪, and many Chinese children learn calligraphy at a very young age. And I hope I can catch up with the Chinese children someday, ha-ha!

Narrator:Many international students share the same passion for Chinese culture. Stella is a big fan of the theatre, and when one of her Chinese friends invited her to a Peking Opera show last summer, she fell in love with it.

Stella:The way of acting, the staging…are so unusual, so fresh, and lively. I especially like the facial makeup. You can figure out every characters personality and status through the colours and symbols on their faces! Red stands for loyalty, black for integrity正直, white for scheming腹黑, green for irritability易怒.. It’s such a creative way to present the characters, very expressive.

Narrator:While Stella has been enjoying Peking Opera, Anthony is realising his kung fu dream. Like many boys, he has been a fan of kung fu movies since young. His very first trip within China was to Shaolin Temple. Gradually, Anthony has been learning that there are many different kung fu styles. Some are tough, like Bruce Lee's style, while others are soft, like tai chi.

Anthony:When I began learning kung fu, I spent nearly two weeks just practising 坐腿. The first step is always the hardest, but I think I've finally got on the right track now. When I do 推手, I can feel the heat in my palms! I’ve found that almost everything in Chinese culture is connected to the life wisdom of kung fu. When I do tai chi, I feel a real sense of peace come over me. It’s been a truly wonderful experience!

Narrator:In addition to learning the language and the culture, international students have another big gain: friendship. When Kathy first arrived in China, she was anxious about the unknown language and society. However, the hospitality of the people she met quickly made her worries melt away. After a month here, she has found herself adjusting well to the new environment.

Kathy:My first birthday in China was an unforgettable moment for me. I entered the room, and my Chinese friends were there with a cake! I was so touched! They also prepared for me special noodles —these noodles are called 长寿面. They told me that in China, people won't lebrate a birthday without these noodles, because long noodles represent the longevity of life. I think it's a wonderful custom! And those were the most delicious noodles I‘ve ever had!

Narrator:As more and more international students come to China from all over the world, more communication, greater cultural exchange, and a deeper mutual understanding are developing. The connection between China and the world is growing stronger, as their young people forge deep friendships.

Reporter:I’m at the opening of "Culture and Ceremony: Bronze in Ancient China", a new exhibition at the British Museum in London. It's very popular! Visitors have come to admire fantastic relics from the National Museum of China in Beijing. Here now is Chinese bronze expert, Li Chen. Could you tell us what visitors can expect to see here, Mr Li?

Li Chen:Yes, as part of an exchange programme, wev’e brought some of our best bronze relics to put on display. Bronze has an important place in Chinese history. It was used for many purposes, from food containers to important ceremonial items. Some of the relics on display here date back to the Xia and Shang Periods. The beautiful and detailed designs are a reflection of the wisdom and artistic talent of our ancestors.

Reporter: That's incredible. I particularly like the bronze instruments. So, is this an ongoing exchange programme?

Li Chen:Yes, the programme began with the British Museums exhibition in Beijing in 2015. The aim is to promote cultural exchange between nations. Although there are a lot of bronze relics to see here, it's a small selection of what the National Museum of China has. We hope this taste will encourage more people to visit Beijing in the future!

Reporter:I’m sure it will. Thank you. Visitors are already amazed by the splendid and long-standing culture of ancient China, and I have one here with me now. Tania is a teacher visiting with her art students. What do they think of the exhibition so far?

Tania:They love it. They’re impressed by the age of the objects and the level of craftsmanship

Reporter:Have they seen relics like these before?

Tania:They’ve seen other bronze relics in museums before, but this has really stirred their interest to learn more!

Reporter:Thank you. The exhibition runs for six months. Although the British Museum is free, tickets are necessary for this special exhibition to control visitor numbers. You can buy tickets online, and I suggest you do it quickly as they’re selling fast! Back to the studio.
